A young peasant, struggling with intellectual disabilities, forms an unlikely connection with a stunning countess amidst the turmoil of the Russian Revolution, and his devotion to her becomes an all-consuming passion.

During the Russian Civil War, a peasant named Sergei struggles to find food in Siberia, scavenging for corpses. He meets a mysterious young woman, Countess Alexandrova, who asks him to pretend to be her husband. As they rest in an abandoned house, a stranger appears, and Sergei is beaten by Cossacks who don't believe the woman's story. The countess is revealed to be a noblewoman, and Sergei is rescued by White cavalry. After recovering from his injuries, Sergei seeks out his "friend" and is hired as a servant by the wealthy Gaidaroff family. However, he soon becomes embroiled in revolutionary discussions with a servant named Ivan, and tensions rise as the Reds gain the upper hand in the town.
