In 1932, a Danish writer, Espen Arnakke, is struggling to find his voice in Norway's literary scene. After receiving harsh criticism from a prominent book critic, Johan Hoeg, Espen reflects on his writing and realizes he may not be being true to himself. He shares his memoirs with Johan's girlfriend, Jenny, who discovers a darker side to his story, including his escape from a suffocating upbringing and a traumatic experience on a merchant ship. As Jenny reads on, she questions the truthfulness of Espen's account, which is revealed to be tied to a profound assertion about humanity.
