In a small Russian town, a Research Institute for magic is home to a powerful witch, Kira Shemahandskaya, who is set to marry Ivan Kivrin. However, a jealous witch, Apollon Sataneev, plots to ruin her plans by telling her that Alyona Sanina, a fellow witch, is actually engaged to Ivan Puhov.
