Barbara Ann Greene, a high-school senior, strives to achieve her goals of popularity, employment, marriage, and maybe even movie stardom, despite facing challenges as a poor student with divorced parents and a mother working as a cocktail waitress. With her best friend and confidant Alan by her side, she navigates her way through adolescence, overcoming obstacles and commenting on the societal norms and values of the time.
