Barney Ingram, a gambler, loses his prize horse Cloverdale III to creditor Emmett Fallon, but the horse escapes after Fallon's truck breaks down near a school bus route. Two schoolkids, Lucas and Stephanie, find the horse and offer to help Emmett in exchange for a deal. They take the horse to Madame Rene, a wealthy owner, and rename it Lightning. As Stephanie trains Lightning, she aspires to become a professional rider, while Barney's mounting gambling debts threaten to ruin his life.
