A Jewish man, escaping from Nazis during WWII, buries suitcases containing cherished items in the ground. After losing his family, he spends years searching for the suitcases in Antwerp, driven by obsession. Meanwhile, his daughter Chaya finds a job as a nanny in a Chassidic family, where she forms a bond with the youngest boy, Simcha, who is learning to speak. However, tragedy strikes when Simcha drowns in a pond, and Chaya is accused of responsibility.
