Poland, 1983. Despite martial law, the communist authorities continue to suppress the Solidarity opposition. Grzegorz Przemyk, son of opposition poet Barbara Sadowska, is arrested and brutally beaten by police on May 12. He dies two days later. Jurek Popiel, a colleague of Przemyk's, witnesses the fatal beating and decides to fight for justice and testify against the police. Initially, the authorities downplay the case, but when 20,000 people march through Warsaw's streets behind Przemyk's coffin, they try to discredit Jurek and Przemyk's mother to prevent Jurek from testifying in court.
