King of Alcatraz background

King of Alcatraz

A ruthless escapee from Alcatraz seizes control of a passenger vessel, prompting two resourceful crew members to devise a daring plan to outwit him and liberate the captives on board.

Two rival radio operators, Ray and Bob, are forced to work together on a ship after getting into a fight. They meet the ship's nurse, Dale, and Ray falls for her again. However, their voyage takes a turn when a notorious gangster, Steve Murkil, boards the ship with his henchmen. Ray is captured and sent down the hatch, but manages to send out an S.O.S. signal before being shot and gravely wounded. Bob makes a deal with Murkil to send out messages in exchange for allowing him to fix the radio and get medical help. With the help of a doctor guiding her, Dale performs surgery on Ray and saves his life. Meanwhile, Bob is killed by the gangsters, and the ship's crew overpowers them. In the end, Ray and Dale are left sitting in a hospital, with Captain Glennman presenting Ray with a heroism award that was originally intended for Bob.
