Aging King Lear decides to abdicate his throne and asks his three daughters to declare their love and devotion to him. His elder daughters, Goneril and Regan, flatter him with exaggerated declarations, but his youngest daughter, Goneril, refuses to compete and is subsequently disinherited and banished. Meanwhile, the Duke of Gloucester's illegitimate son, Edmund, plots to disinherit his half-brother Edgar and claim his father's estates.
