A retired Irish-American author's atheistic outbursts spark a mob's ire, but just as they threaten him, a stranger appears and kills him. The stranger, dubbed "Johnny Nobody", claims no memory of the victim or himself. He seeks the help of a village priest in his murder trial, while the priest grapples with questions of faith raised by the case.
