As young men from a small American town march off to military service, the community celebrates their departure. However, the surprise attack on Pearl Harbor brings a sense of dread, as the townspeople realize their sons may be in danger. The subsequent fall of the Philippines leads to devastating losses, and the town comes to grips with its role in the war. Consumed by grief and a sense of duty, the community makes a collective vow to contribute to the war effort in any way they can.
