Gene, a former Confederate cavalryman, assumes a new identity as an undercover agent in the Union army.

After the Civil War, a former Confederate cavalry captain turned Union Army sergeant, Gene Autry, is tasked with quelling Indian raids on the frontier. Alongside scout Shadrach Jones, Gene clashes with Lt. Randolph Mason, who has romantic feelings for Melody Colton, daughter of rancher Jim Colton.
