In the exotic island of Bali, a photographer, Glenn, is struggling with a mystical crisis after being influenced by the island's magical rituals. He converts to Hinduism and becomes a polygamist with two indigenous wives. Meanwhile, his friend Carlo is skeptical and focused on his work, but has a loyal indigenous lover. When Carlo's wife Daria joins him in Bali, she forms a close bond with Glenn and eventually falls in love with him. Despite their open marriage, Glenn's attachment to Hinduism leads him to perform a ritual that binds him to a holy man, ultimately resulting in his death. Carlo returns to Rome, consumed by depression, and eventually mistakes a prostitute for his wife, leading to a tragic ending.
