In 1988, Claudia Brenner and her girlfriend Rebecca Wight went camping in Pennsylvania's Michaux State Forest, unaware they were being stalked by Stephen Roy Carr, a "mountain man" who harbored severe homophobia. Carr shot at them eight times, fatally wounding Rebecca and leaving Claudia, who was hit five times, to find her way to safety. Carr was sentenced to life without parole and Claudia has since written a book about the incident, using her experience to fight anti-gay violence as an activist.
