John Hayden, an art student, abandons his studies in Greece to take over his father's meat packing business after his father's passing. He marries Martha, a social climber who belittles his ideals about worker well-being and meat quality.

John Hayden, an art student, abandons his studies in Greece to take over his father's meatpacking business after his father's passing. He marries Martha, a social climber who mocks his idealistic views on worker welfare and meat quality. Meanwhile, John becomes involved in supporting the music career of singer Laura. However, he makes a grave mistake by selling tainted meat to the Army during the Spanish-American War. As a result, Martha hires detectives to keep tabs on John and Laura, leading to his indictment for fraud. John is forced to flee to Greece, leaving behind his business and his troubled relationships.
