In rural Saskatchewan during the mid-twentieth century, the Mandolin family is shunned by their community due to being perceived as different. Following the tragic suicide of Snit Mandolin's father, some community members, led by the local grocery store owner, further isolate the family.

In rural Saskatchewan, the Mandolin family is shunned by their community. After the father's suicide, the community's negative perception of the family solidifies, and they arrange for a teenager, Snit, to be taken away to a group home where he faces abuse. Snit escapes and returns to his family farm, where his aunt is struggling to maintain the property. He agrees to a moonshine business with a friend, Johnny, who wants to escape his abusive father.
