The McMurrin family's rural Washington farm, built by Susan's father, is in danger of being lost after John and Susan's death in a car crash. Their children, Amy, Sam, and Michael, must now rely on their aunt Martha, who struggles to provide for herself, to keep the family together. Social worker Paige Holloway is sympathetic to Martha's goal of keeping the children on the farm, but their efforts are hindered by the bureaucracy and the fact that the children's will does not favor Martha as their legal guardian.
