A young store clerk, Joe Riley, sacrifices his city life to pursue his dream of becoming a farmer in Arizona during the Great Depression. He embarks on a journey by hitchhiking, befriending an illegal immigrant, Anita, and a hobo, Tony, along the way. Together, they face numerous challenges, including run-ins with the law and rival hobos, while also dealing with the threat of Anita's immigration status being discovered.
