Charles Richardson, a report writer for the Utah state government, reminisces about his past love affair with Laura Connolly, who was already married to ex-football player Jim "Ox" when they met. Despite being on a trial separation, Laura's guilt over leaving Ox complicated their relationship. Charlie still longs to be with Laura, who ultimately returned to Ox, unaware of Charlie's existence.
