A 20-year-old solo mother, Leeanne, takes her one-year-old son Sam on a train to visit her mother on her birthday. However, Leeanne's mother refuses to accept Sam due to being born out of wedlock. Meanwhile, Leeanne's brother Brent pretends to be a student or bible salesman, but is actually a thief who robs houses. When a victim returns home during one of his robberies, Brent panics and sends her falling down the stairs.
