A Marine Corps pilot, Lefty Phelps, overcomes his past mistakes and earns respect after defending himself against accusations of throwing a college football game. He befriends Panama Williams, an instructor at the Marine Corps flying school, and later falls in love with Elinor, his nurse. When the Marines are sent to quell a rebellion in Nicaragua, Lefty accompanies Panama as a mechanic and is tasked with proposing to Elinor on his behalf. However, Elinor reveals her love for Lefty, and their confrontation is interrupted by a call for aerial support. Lefty teams up with Steve Roberts, and their plane is shot down, leading to a rescue attempt that fails. Eventually, Panama flies a search mission alone, but is wounded, and Lefty takes control of the plane, executing a solo landing.
