In Dafen village, a Chinese artisan meticulously hand-reproduces Caravaggio's "John in the Wilderness" for global consumers. His family is involved in the process, contributing to the cottage industry. Meanwhile, a Swiss Italian poet in London receives the copy as a 40th birthday gift, but is disappointed by its lack of authenticity. A philosopher friend offers to repaint the copy, and as he does, two other friends, a writer and a photographer, become involved, each bringing their own artistic perspective. The story is mirrored by the daily life of the Chinese artisan's family in Shenzhen, as they strive to improve their lives through their work.
