In May 1940, German troops invade France, prompting a small village in Pas-de-Calais to evacuate. The villagers, led by their mayor Paul, flee to the coast, seeking to maintain order and republican values. Amidst the chaos, Mado plays music to lift spirits, while Suzanne, a young teacher, navigates the group to the least congested route. She also befriends Max, an 8-year-old German boy whose father, Hans, was arrested after the war declaration.
