In May and June 1940, hundreds of thousands of British and French soldiers are stranded in the French port town of Dunkirk, with the only escape route being the sea. As the Germans dominate the skies, the British troops and ships are relentlessly bombed, leaving their situation increasingly desperate. In a last-ditch effort, Britain sends both naval and civilian vessels to rescue the besieged forces, a story told through the eyes of a soldier, two Royal Air Force fighter pilots, and a group of civilians on their boat, part of the evacuation fleet.
