Patricia Carroll travels to London to marry Alan, but first visits Mrs. Trefoile, the mother of her former fiancé Stephen, who died in a car accident. Mrs. Trefoile, a religious fanatic, insists Pat stay overnight to attend mass the next morning. After mass, Pat reveals she never intended to marry Stephen, sending Mrs. Trefoile into a state of madness.

A grieving mother's guilt and resentment towards her deceased son's fiancée boil over into a descent into madness, as she exacts a twisted form of revenge on the woman she believes is responsible for her son's untimely demise.
