In the small town of Little Wesley, a loveless marriage between Vic and Melinda Van Allen is sustained by a peculiar arrangement: Melinda is free to take multiple lovers, as long as she doesn't abandon her family. Vic becomes fixated on the unsolved murder of one of Melinda's former lovers, Martin McRae. To deter her current affair, Vic falsely claims responsibility for the crime. However, when the real killer is caught, the community misinterprets Vic's confession as dark humor.
