Three reckless teenagers commandeer a yacht, the "Seawitch", meant for the local sea scouts, and run out of fuel off the perilous Bradda Head. Stranded, they try to set the sails but lose the mainsail, which gets entangled with a floating mine. As the tide shifts, the yacht drifts back towards the harbour, towing the mine with it, threatening to collide with a nearby tanker. The teenagers, joined by the scouts, make a last-ditch effort to change the mine's course until help arrives.
