In 1949, faded film star Emery Slade, once a self-absorbed celebrity, is now broke and still arrogant. He is approached by a Fox producer to persuade Broadway star Rosalie Brooks to star in the movie "Bandwagon". However, Slade's attention is diverted when he meets Julie Clarke, his assistant's former girlfriend, and decides she should play the lead instead of Rosalie.
