In the midst of Chile's right-wing military dictatorship under Augusto Pinochet, a 32-year-old woman named Gladys lives in the poor and tumultuous neighborhood of La Victoria in Santiago. She shares a home with her mother and young daughter, and their lives are forever changed when a 23-year-old North American missionary named Samuel Thompson arrives, bringing with him a sense of optimism and idealism. As Samuel witnesses the harsh realities faced by his new neighbors, he begins to document their struggles and the silent fight for democracy with his camera.
