In 1870s India, Charu's life is marked by loneliness and idleness until her husband Bhupati introduces her to his brother-in-law Umapada, who keeps her company. Meanwhile, Bhupati's cousin Amal, a would-be writer, returns home after completing his education, and Charu and Amal's literary friendship blossoms into something more.
