P.K. Nair, a pioneering film archivist in India, was fascinated with cinema as a child. He collected ticket stubs, lobby cards, and film cans, eventually building the National Film Archive of India from scratch. Despite the country's lack of emphasis on film archiving, Nair's efforts preserved nine precious silent films out of an estimated 1,338 made in India. His encyclopedic memory for film was legendary, and he influenced generations of filmmakers, including the Indian New Wave directors.
