A writer, Jean Williams, visits an Eskimo settlement in search of material for her novel. She becomes stranded with a trapper, Gaston Rogers, after the village flees due to a vicious wolf pack led by a half-dog, half-wolf named Swift Lightning. As they navigate the harsh winter conditions, Jean and Gaston develop feelings for each other, but their relationship is complicated by the presence of a white trader, Hugo, who is also in love with Jean. Meanwhile, Swift Lightning finds love with a collie named Firefly, and they depart together. The story takes a dramatic turn when Jean and Gaston get caught in a rapidly breaking ice flow, losing their dogs and sled. They eventually find a deserted cabin, where they are joined by Hugo, his St. Bernard Buck, and the reunited Swift Lightning and Firefly. The story becomes a complex web of love triangles between the humans and animals, with surprising twists and turns.
