Valerie, a high school graduate, embarks on a road trip with a friend when their car breaks down. A casual acquaintance, Buddy, offers a ride, but Valerie becomes increasingly uncomfortable as he makes advances. Despite her reservations, she stays with him, and he takes her to a liquor store where he robs it at gunpoint, killing one person. Valerie is arrested and convicted of murder, despite her friend's testimony and public defender's efforts. She is sentenced to a harsh reform school, where she must find a way to survive.
