In the present day, a town in Henan province, China, a detective leads a stakeout to investigate a child-trafficking ring. A young policeman is shot and wounded, and a suspect is later found dead. Meanwhile, a textile worker and her daughter are at a temple fair when the child-traffickers strike, stealing two children and abducting the worker's daughter. The worker's estranged husband, a petty criminal, is suspected of being involved with the traffickers.
