Donna Foster, a loyal assistant, allows her niece Christabel Caine to stay in her apartment while attending business school in San Francisco. Christabel will soon assume Donna's position at the publishing house and apartment. She befriends Donna, her boyfriend Curtis, and their bohemian friends, including artist Gabriel and writer Nick. Christabel is attracted to Nick, but has a hidden agenda to marry Curtis for his wealth. She tries to sow doubt in Donna's and Curtis' relationship to achieve her goal.
