Dietrich Bonhoeffer, a German Lutheran pastor, theologian, and anti-Nazi dissident, struggled against the Third Reich. He was a key founder of the Confessing Church movement and vocal opponent of Hitler's persecution of Jews. Arrested in 1943, Bonhoeffer was imprisoned for 18 months before being transferred to Flossenbürg concentration camp. Accused of involvement in the 20 July plot to assassinate Adolf Hitler, he was quickly tried and executed on April 9, 1945, just before the Third Reich's surrender.
