"That's for White people." A phrase that incensed Gary Wilkerson, Jr. as a young, Black child with a love for outdoor activities like camping. Unaware of its historical context as a warning passed down through generations of Black Americans who were kept from exploring the wilderness due to the threat of violence, Gary decides to confront this fear head-on. Determined to overcome this inherited fear, Gary embarks on the monumental challenge of thru-hiking the Pacific Crest Trail, a grueling 2,600-mile journey from Mexico to Canada that spans six months. Supported by his unwavering companion Mary, Gary sets out on this life-changing adventure. However, navigating the unforgiving terrain proves to be a daunting task for someone who has never spent a night outdoors. As he struggles through the wilderness, Gary embarks on a journey of self-discovery, forming unexpected connections with fellow hikers and challenging the stereotypes of Black individuals in the great outdoors.
