A Cornell-educated man, Taro Seki, returns to Japan as the war party gains control, seeking to work for American engineer O'Hara and falling for his secretary Tama. However, he's drafted and sent to China, where he's hardened by the atrocities he witnesses. Returning to Japan a changed man, he's met with remorse from his father, a cabinet minister, who regrets the war's impact on his son and country.
