Two university students, Luo and Ma, are sent to a mining village in 1971 China to purge their classical Western education during the cultural revolution. Amidst backbreaking work and ignorance, they find solace in music and beautiful local women, but none compare to the tailor's granddaughter. They woo her by teaching her about classic Western literature, starting a journey that changes her perspective and teaches them about the power of literature and their own ability to change their world.
