A young reporter, Jerry Hampden, is fired from her job at a large newspaper after her scoop about a suicide is suppressed due to the influential owner's involvement. She finds a new job at a small town newspaper, The Advocate, in Apex, California, and proves herself as a skilled editor. When a big story breaks about a wildcat oil well drilling, Jerry uncovers a scheme by the local banker to suppress the news and buy back shares. With evidence of the banker's wrongdoing and a personal connection to the department store owner involved, Jerry forces the shysters to agree to help the local community rather than exploit them.
