Amnesty International was founded in 1961 by British lawyer Peter Benenson after publishing an article highlighting the imprisonment and torture of individuals for their opinions and religion. The organization began with small groups of dedicated citizens writing to dictators, and grew to become the world's largest human rights organization with millions of members.
