In 1862, during the American Civil War, a Union company led by Colonel Claude Brackenbury receives an order to attack Confederate positions. A mishap leads to the colonel's horse stampeding, causing his soldiers to follow, which is seen as cowardice. As punishment, Brackenbury and his executive officer are demoted and transferred to Fort Hooker, where they're tasked with leading a misfit company.

In the midst of the Civil War, a ragtag group of Union soldiers, deemed unfit for regular duty, is dispatched to the Western territory, where they must navigate treacherous terrain and outsmart cunning Southern spies who are determined to uncover their mission.
