A disillusioned cigarette factory worker, yearning for a better life, becomes embroiled with a group of thieves plotting to steal from the very factory that employs him.

The Flints, a family in Bethnal Green, face significant changes as the father considers leaving his dockwork and the daughter prepares for a new life with her husband and unborn child. Meanwhile, the son, Ricky, feels trapped and longs to escape his circumstances, becoming entangled in a planned cigarette factory heist and developing a complicated relationship with the enigmatic Catherine.
