A Midsummer Night's Dream background

A Midsummer Night's Dream

A cinematic adaptation of the Royal Shakespeare Company's 1996 production of William Shakespeare's 'A Midsummer Night's Dream'.

A young boy's vivid imagination brings a play to life in a tumultuous Athens, where authority is in disarray. The Duke and Duchess are at odds, with the Duchess supporting Hermia's defiance of her father's choice of suitor, Demetrius. Meanwhile, Helena pines for Demetrius, who is oblivious to her affections. In the woods, a group of craftsmen rehearse a play, while the fairy king and queen, Oberon and Titania, are embroiled in a bitter dispute. Oberon's mischievous sprite, Puck, attempts to manipulate the four young lovers into compatible pairs, but his efforts lead to chaos before ultimately resolving in a happy conclusion.
