Violet Stoneham, a lonely Anglo-Indian school-teacher, lives in a small flat in Calcutta with only her tom cat for company. Her life takes a turn when a former student, Nandita Roy, visits her with her boyfriend, Samaresh Moitra, an author who is drawn to the flat's solitude. Violet agrees to let Samaresh use the flat as his writing retreat, and he gifts her an antique record-player. As Christmas approaches, Violet hopes to reconnect with her niece and her friends, but a surprise awaits her at their destination.
