Joana's joy turns to despair when her abusive husband discovers her pregnancy and attempts to harm her. She flees the city and finds refuge on a boat with criminals. However, realizing the danger, she sees land beyond and leaps into the water, swimming to Terceira Island and leaving her life behind. Exhausted on the shore, Joana encounters Chico during a religious ceremony. She arrives with the child and inadvertently becomes mistaken for a saint, "Our Lady of the Sea," revered by the island's faithful.
