In the turbulent Bakumatsu era that led to the Restoration, an infamous Ishin assassin named Hitokiri Battousai gained legendary status for his lethal skills and brutal nature during a time of turmoil. However, as the fighting came to an end, Battousai vanished without a trace only to reappear eleven years later as Kenshin Himura, a wandering swordsman living at Kamiya Kasshu dojo under the fiery-tempered Kaoru's tutelage. Kenshin now finds himself surrounded by new friends: Sagara Sanosuke, a streetfighter; Myoujin Yahiko, an ex-samurai’s son; and Takani Megumi, a shrewd doctor. He vows to protect the weak without resorting to violence in order to atone for his past deeds. Kenshin's vow is put to the test when he encounters the ghosts of his past.
