Sarah Reeves leaves her pampered life in San Francisco to start anew in New York City, where her late biological mother lived. She hopes to find her biological father, whom she's never met. Adopting her birth mother's last name, Merrin, Sarah moves into the same apartment where her mother once lived, sharing it with Romy Sullivan, a struggling actress reminiscent of her mother. As she settles in, Sarah befriends a diverse group, including musician John Maguire, waitress Joss House, their eccentric landlord Cecilia, and friendly neighbor J.B.
