Gumbas first appeared in 1953 as a music video called "Gumbasia." In 1956, Gumby and his horse friend Pokey joined The Howdy Doody Show, becoming so popular that they had their own show: "The Gumby Show" in 1957. Each episode featured three cartoons from the 1956 shorts plus new episodes. Goo the blue mermaid, Prickle the yellow dinosaur, and Nopey the dog were introduced in the 1960s, followed by Blockheads who chased after Gumby, Pokey, Prickle, and Goo with their block heads. Gumbo and Gumba were Gumby's parents.
