Dakota City teenager Virgil Hawkins gets entangled in a street gang, which leads to a fateful night at a chemical storage yard. The police's tear gas sparks a series of explosions, known as the "Bang Baby Incident", affecting all gangs and more. Virgil's exposure grants him the ability to project and control electricity. He decides to become the superhero Static, with the help of his inventive friend Richie, who later gains powers as Gear. As a result, many surviving gang members become supervillains, and Static must fight for justice while navigating his personal life.
